ABOUT US
Horse Power for Ability is a not-for-profit
organisation based near Alnwick in
Northumberland. We provide hippotherapy to
people of all ages and with a range of
impairments across Northumberland,
Tyne and Wear, and beyond.
With only 14 physiotherapists
qualified to practise
hippotherapy in the UK
and currently
practising, our
nearest
colleagues
are in Fife,
Lincolnshire, in
North Wales and
on the Isle of Man.
What distinguishes us
from other physiotherapists
providing hippotherapy in the
UK is that
     - we treat children and adults
     - we are independent
     - our practice follows the German
hippotherapy model; Germany is the world
       leader in hippotherapy practice and
       education
     - we only ever have one horse and patient in
the riding arena at any one time.
What distinguishes us further is that our chair and
lead physiotherapist does not only have a
doctorate in hippotherapy, and is therefore an
expert in the theory of hippotherapy, she also has
cerebral palsy and is therefore acutely aware of
the effects of a disability on an individual, and of
the benefits a good horse’s movement brings
to people with neuro-motor disabilities.
This combination of expertise and
personal experience in hippotherapy is
unique world-wide.
We are delighted to acknowledge a
grant towards key items, such as our
wheelchair accessible mounting platform and
our assessment couch, which we received
through the LEADER programme from the
European Regional Development Fund and One
North East.
