Because our clients have special needs, we need specialist
equipment, some of which is not available in the UK.
While we can use some existing equipment, we need some
specialist equipment for hippotherapy, such as saddles and
specialist rollers. While the horse is clearly our biggest asset,
the use of different specialist equipment enables us to help
people with different physical problems.
For example, the photo on the left shows the specialist
hippotherapy roller which we purchased from German saddler
Meinecke. It lies very flat against the horse which allows people
who have difficulty stretching their hips apart to sit on the
horse.
Dorothee is making her own saddle available for hippotherapy.
However, we would like to buy a specialist saddle to help
position clients on horseback in a way that maximises their
ability to benefit from the horse’s movement. These saddlres
are handmade in Derbyshire and are £1850 excluding the extra
modifications we require for hippotherapy.
We are also looking to get funding to
buy cavaletti blocks and poles.
By asking to horse to walk over poles
we can make the balancing task on
horseback for our clients a little bit
harder, as the horse’s back moves
more when it steps over poles. A set of
six cavaletti blocks and poles like the
one on the photo is around £400.
