We currently work with Rowan who is an
excellent therapy horse in terms of his
movement, schooling and character. However,
he is rather wide which makes it impossible for
people with severely restricted movement in
their hip joints to sit on him. Therefore, we are
looking to work with a second horse to be able
to accommodate clients with a wider range of
physical needs.
In April we started working with Jet, our
younger horse. Jet, too, is excellently suited for
hippotherapy in terms of his movement and
character.  The movement he offers our clients
is different from Rowan’s, which is excellent, as
different people need different movement input
- in fact, their movement requirements are likely
to change as their movement ability progresses
within a course of treatment.
However, Jet is still only five and more easily
distracted than Rowan. This means that we
cannot use him for as many clients.
If anything was to happen to Rowan or Jet, we
would not be very limited in our ablility to
provide hippotherapy, as horses need to be not
only suited in character and their movement,
but also specially trained for this kind of
demanding work.
In fact, Rowan was unable to work at the
moment, due to a serious hoof condition called
laminitis. He was off for more than four months,
as a result of this. As Jet was not trained for
hippotherapy then, this meant that we were
unable provide hippotherapy for this period of
time.
Last year we were offered the donation of two
horses that would have been highly suitable for
hippotherapy horse in terms of their age, character, movement, and size. However, we were
unable to accept these donations, because we do not have funds to pay for their keep.
If you feel you can make a contribution towards the keep of a suitable horse, so we can
safeguard our hippotherapy provision and provide a service for patients which our current
horses cannot cater for, please contact us.
